The Time Machine

End of last part:

DAVID: Did you just?. . .There it was again!

GEORGE: What?

DAVID: Something was on my face. It felt cold and dirty! On my face and in my hair! It's cold! It's death! George!

GEORGE: You're right, there's something in here with us! And it smells like death! What was it?

DAVID: I don't know! But look at them! Look at the little people!

GEORGE: They look so afraid! Something has scared all of them! Let's get out of here! Let's go outside. I want some fresh air.

Part 3

DAVID: We went quickly from the hall, and outside, away from the little people. The moon was full, just over head, and it was close to dawn. There was a faint sound close behind us. And we turned, nervous and tense, but it was only Weena, coming swiftly to join us.

Weena joins George and David

WEENA: George, I'm afraid! Dark!

DAVID: Then there IS something.

GEORGE: What do you mean, Weena? Dark, what. . .

WEENA: Dark things! Dark place! Dark!

DAVID: Why should they be afraid of the night, George?

GEORGE: It's not the night. Dark place, that's our clue.

DAVID: Perhaps it's something underground!

[DAVID DESCRIBES WHAT HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY]

DAVID: It was another day. We had walked into a lovely, wooded place, about a mile from the community. Suddenly Weena screamed.

We stopped immediately. A pair of angry eyes were staring at us. As we stood there, too afraid to move, the thing, a small animal that looked like a little bit like an ape, moved quickly past us and disappeared in the clearing about thirty yards away.

A movement in the dark

WEENA: David!

DAVID: What was it?

GEORGE: I couldn't see it too well. It seemed to be some kind of animal with white hair on its head and on it's back.

DAVID: It looked like a small ape!

GEORGE: It was running on all fours - both arms and legs - with its arms held very low.

DAVID: Weena, Weena what was it?

WEENA: Morlock! A Morlock!

GEORGE: Who are the Morlock? What are they? Weena tell me!

WEENA: No, no!

GEORGE: Let's go over and see where it disappeared. Come along, David.

[DAVID DESCRIBES WHAT HAPPENED NEXT]

DAVID: In the clearing we found a round opening in the ground.

A round opening in the clearing

George and I leaned over and looked down a shaft, a dark tunnel going straight down. A small white creature was going down a ladder. It moved like a human spider, its large, white eyes watching me as it went swiftly down. Then it disappeared in the dark.

GEORGE: David, did you see it? It looks like an ape!

DAVID: Yes, but also like a man.

GEORGE: So there are two species of human-like animals in this world!

DAVID: Yes.

GEORGE: The little people above the ground, and this ugly thing, this white monster, below.

DAVID: That white look . . . it's common in animals that live in the dark. Like huge rats. Like worms that are cold to the touch. I know, because they've touched me . . .

GEORGE: David, you can feel the air being pulled down into the shaft?

DAVID: Yes.

GEORGE: The earth must have many tunnels here under our feet. These monsters must live in the tunnels.

DAVID: I think we know now who stole our time machine!

GEORGE: Yes, the Morlock! So, then . . .

DAVID: Then we'll go down and have a look.

WEENA: No! No! Don't go!

GEORGE: Why not, Weena?

Weena warns against going down the tunnel

WEENA: Morlock! You will never come back!

DAVID: We must have our machine, my dear. You wait for us here.

WEENA: No! No!

[DAVID DESCRIBES WHAT HAPPENED NEXT]

DAVID: And so we went down. Down the ladder meant for creatures so much smaller than us. Down we climbed.

Climbing down

Down. . . down. . . into the darkness. Almost, it seemed, into the center of the earth. . . Into the core of the world. . .

DAVID: How much longer?

GEORGE: We won't know until we reach the bottom. Can't be much further. Do you hear that? Like machinery. We're almost there.

DAVID: Thank heaven for that.

GEORGE: Alright David, I'm on the bottom. Come along, just a few more steps. Now, give me your hand, David. Good. We're here.

DAVID: Yes, in the land of the Morlock.

GEORGE: Do you have a match you can light?

DAVID: Yes, here.

[DAVID LIGHTS A MATCH]

GEORGE: There seems to be a large room at the end of this passage .

DAVID: What do you suppose they'll do if they catch us?

GEORGE: I have no idea. Better take care not to be caught. Ah, another match.

[DAVID LIGHTS ANOTHER MATCH]

DAVID: What is that noise?

GEORGE: Probably their ventilating system, pumping the air from the outside down to here.

Ventilation system

There must be thousands upon thousands of these Morlock living under the earth.

DAVID: We haven't seen any yet, except for our friend who came down ahead of us. Why do you suppose they wanted our time machine?

GEORGE: I think they wanted us — not the time machine.

DAVID: And we've come to them.

GEORGE: We must! It's our only chance — our only chance to find the time machine and return to our own world. But, David, if that noise does come from air pumps . . .

DAVID: Yes,

GEORGE: . . . then why is it so stuffy here?

DAVID: George, what's that stench?

GEORGE: I think . . . I think it smells like blood. Light another match.

[DAVID LIGHTS ANOTHER MATCH]

DAVID: George, look straight ahead. On the table.

Bones of the Eloi

GEORGE: Now we know what they feed on , these Morlock!

DAVID: They're cannibals!

GEORGE: Another match, David!

DAVID: Yes, of course. Uh . . . George, I have no more. I've used our last match.

GEORGE: Alright we'll have to go back. We know the secret now, anyway. Morlock, living here, underground, are the rulers of this world. And our friends up above are like cattle. Fed by the Morlock. Clothed, supplied and housed until the day when they're taken and brought underground as food. This is the future you're looking at . This is what people will become.

DAVID: GEORGE!

GEORGE: What is it!

DAVID: I felt hands! Cold hands!

GEORGE: Take one of these ladders

DAVID: Yes, give it to me.

GEORGE: Use it as a weapon! Hit the thing with it!

A Worlock

[SCREAMS FROM MORLOCK ARE HEARD]

GEORGE: David they're here beside me!

GEORGE: Use the ladder, man, use the ladder!

DAVID: They're all around us!

GEORGE: This way! Follow me this way, back this way.
